Why we built Safe by Choice not by Chance
This is the first post on the new Safe by Choice not by Chance site. It feels right to start by saying what we are building, and why now.
What we are
A small, considered safety practice. Practical work, grounded in what the law actually asks, built around the people doing the work. We help organisations get ahead of risk rather than wait for it — and when something does go wrong, we help with the honest learning afterwards.
Why now
Most workplace incidents aren’t caused by the rare or the unfamiliar. They are caused by the obvious thing everyone decided to leave for another day — or quietly assumed someone else was on top of. Most of those things, fixed early, cost very little. A conversation. A change to how a job is set up. A line in a method statement someone actually reads.
The cost when something does go wrong is almost always greater than what it would have taken to act the week before. That gap — between what is reasonably practicable and what gets left — is where we work.
What you can expect from this space
This is where we will publish the work that doesn’t fit into a tweet or an invoice. Short briefings on what the law actually requires, sector by sector. Honest reflections on what we are seeing in the field. The odd template, the odd checklist, when one would help. Always with sources cited; always written so the person doing the work can use it.
If something here is useful to you, share it with the person on your team it would help most. That is how this work travels.
If you want to talk
Twenty minutes. No pitch. Whether something nearly happened, a piece of work is on a deadline, or you have a clear idea of where you want to get to with no obvious path through — start there.
Safe by choice has to start with a choice.
